I've been telling y'all this all along ... we're screwed. This is one of the reasons that I don't feel there's a whole lot of value in the survival forum simply talking about canning beans and storing food and water. Those stop-gap measures just mean you will die slower than the rest of civilization.
If you want to survive, you'd better completely rearrange your lifestyle. Get back to a self-sustaining agrarian methodology and get to a survivable location. Living in a subdivision next to a city of 10 million potentially starving people isn't going to be a good situation no matter HOW good of a gardener you are. I think if you're not living like your great-grandfather did then you're probably going to be in a world of hurt when this house of straw comes apart. Ann Barnhardt certainly seems to think so. I'd like to know what preparations and adjustments she's making in her own personal life. The stock traders and professional money people are all looking pretty scared these days.

Ernie, I agree with you. Several years ago I had a "gut feeling" that DH and I needed to get out of our little neighborhood on the edge of town and set up a homestead in a rural area. We had a five-year plan for leaving, but we abruptly left only two years into that plan. That gut feeling was so strong to Get Out Now! I now have that same gut feeling that we need to focus on living an agrarian life like previous generations did. I've learned to listen to those little voices and gut feelings.

We are fubar'd for sure, have felt that way for a number of years. Just happy I am not in the Lesser48, even though being here has it's own challenges. I may be optimistic but I place a lot of confidence in the general "can do and get by" nature of residents here.

File this in the random-things-politicians-say file. Speaking to a Cary Rotary Club today, N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue suggested suspending Congressional elections for two years so that Congress can focus on economic recovery and not the next election.
"I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won't hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that," Perdue said. "You want people who don't worry about the next election."
