I saw a dead porcupine this morning by the side of the road. I've never seen one before, live or dead. This one had been hit by a vehicle. I got out and gathered up some of his tail quills, but they aren't as impressive as I had hoped. Perhaps it was a young one.

How long are they? Older ones I gathered in Wisconsin, tail quills were 8" or so long.

These were pretty smallish. About 3" long. Not very impressive at all.

Sounds young or one that just shedded for mating. Too bad they were so short, otherwise I'd hit you up for some quills. I've been fiddling with quillwork for about six years now and am finally becoming proficient. Now I need more quills and some braintan to work on larger projects.
